BBC EastEnders fans ‘work out’ solution to Reiss and Sonia’s debts amid dark twist

EastEnders’ Reiss Colwell went through with his sinister plan on Tuesday night.

Only recently on the BBC One soap, Reiss has embarked on another IVF attempt with girlfriend Sonia Fowler after the nurse found out he had been using his comatose wife Debbie’s money to fund the treatment. Sonia’s sister Bianca Jackson uncovered the truth as she tracked Reiss down and found him by Debbie’s bedside in hospital after discovering he had tried to scam Kat Slater and Jay Brown in vain to gather the funds necessary for his other half.

Viewers will recall that Reiss eventually admitted to Sonia what he had been up to and after initial reluctance, the nurse was then convinced by Kathy Beale to give her beau some credit and the couple agreed to give things another shot… with the rest of Debbie’s money in hand. EastEnders viewers have been left wary of Reiss, speculating that Debbie’s coma could have been the result of his own actions.

In recent episodes, it was revealed that Debbie’s care fees were three months overdue and the accountant was stressed over the £18,000 bill. And on Monday night, things only got worse when Debbie’s care home rung Reiss to reveal he still owes them money and that Debbie will be moved if he doesn’t pay.

Feeling desperate, Reiss decided to scam Sharon Watts and lied to her about an outstanding VAT receipt. However, he soon felt guilty when she became emotional about late partner Keanu Taylor. Struggling with his money woes and lies, Reiss visited Debbie for solace before deciding to come clean to Sonia. Yet in true soap style, just as Reiss was about to come clean, Sonia revealed the good news that she is pregnant.

Despite the good news, Reiss still decided to come clean about their debt, leaving Sonia upset about his dishonesty again and ruining her exciting news. Later, Reiss headed to Sharon saying he had made a mistake and that the VAT bill still stands, warning she’ll need to pay £13,500 as soon as possible.

On Tuesday night, Sonia announced that she and Reiss needed to look for extra work in a bid to pay their debts and the dodgy accountant got more than he bargained for when he landed a temporary job at Fox & Hair. However, despite the new venture, Reiss still went through with his Sharon scheme on Tuesday as he asked the businesswoman about her outstanding funds to which she agreed to pay. However, things went from bad to worse for Reiss when Phil overheard and was left baffled.

Demanding to know what is going on, Sharon told Phil that she has taken her eye off the accounts recently. Worrying about Reiss’ intentions, Sharon insisted to Phil that he is trustworthy and would be bringing over proof that she owed the money. Taking to Twitter, now X, viewers were quick to come up with a solution to Reiss and Sonia’s money woes without resorting to crime.

One person said: “She’s a nurse he’s an accountant they should remortgage to replenish what they took from ‘Debbie’s account’ ! #EastEnders #Sonia”, a different account put: “They got a mortgage free house there. Why don’t Sonia release some dough outta it #EastEnders” while another wrote: “Sonias house is worth a million quid, and she doesn’t pay a mortgage on it, but she’s happy to steal the last £20k off a woman in a coma. She could phone the bank and get £50k out of that house within 20 minutes. Wake up, Debbie. You’ve got some debts to collect! #Eastenders.”
