EastEnders scenes may have revealed what will lead to Denise Fox’s downfall on the BBC soap.

A returning character got more than they bargained for on Tuesday night, resulting in Denise appearing to make a murder confession. Viewers saw the return of former villain Lucas Johnson yet again, as Denise’s killer ex-husband was the person she was left turning to.

Denise visited him in prison in a recent episode, wanting to seek clarity on how she was feeling after the murder of Keanu Taylor. Denise and five other characters were at the scene of the crime of his demise on Christmas Day, before they covered up the murder and buried his corpse under the café floor.

In recent weeks we have seen Denise’s mental health spiralling as she struggles with the guilt and the lies, especially after her distinctive necklace fell into the grave and remains with the body. Fearing she is going to be set up by the others, she now has the added pressure of Linda Carter’s son Johnny finding out what they did.

Denise is experiencing psychosis and keeps seeing murdered Keanu everywhere, with him even talking to her. Her behaviour has sparked concern with the other culprits of the crime and killer Linda, while she isn’t the only one falling apart.

But amid speculation she’s stolen the murder weapon, Denise could seal her own downfall after the latest episode. After worrying Lucas with her visit recently, where she hinted she needed to repent her sins, Denise was back visiting him on Tuesday night.

This time, he begged her to confess whatever she was hiding and told her he was the person she could confide in. As she asked about whether he would keep her secret, he told her she needed to tell him what was troubling her in order to seek forgiveness from God.

He repeated that the only way for her was to confess, and he needed to know the truth. Denise told him she needed the Devil to find peace, meaning Keanu.

Lucas told her: “Confess and you will be free,” leading to Denise saying: “You won’t tell, you swear?” before dropping the unnamed others in it by telling her ex it wasn’t just her involved.

She said: “It’s not just my secret, the others… you don’t know what they will do. You don’t know what they are capable of.” Lucas told her to “unburden her soul”, with her then finally confessing: “I buried him, I put him in the ground.” The episode ended there, but will Lucas figure out the truth, and will Denise go into details about the crime?

It comes ahead of a Walford ‘exit’ for the soap favourite, as she flees the Square in upcoming scenes. Concern grows for Denise as she spirals, with her racing out of Walford and disappearing into the woods – but will she be found?
