BBC EastEnders fans point out ‘forgotten’ character in Whitney Dean exit storyline

Whitney Dean gave birth to a healthy baby girl in EastEnders, surrounded by her loved ones. However, viewers were fuming as one character was clearly pushed aside.

Lauren Branning has come under fire for betraying Whitney Dean and EastEnders fans have asked for Chelsea Fox to take over as the latter’s maid of honour.

In scenes aired this Thursday (May 16, 2024), the market trader portrayed by Shona McGarty was in a panic as she went into labour in Bianca Jackson’s locked taco van and her pal Lauren Branning (Jacqueline Jossa) set the vehicle’s alarm off in a desperate attempt to get help.

Whitney’s adoptive mother Bianca (Patsy Palmer) saved the say, with Chelsea Fox (Zaraah Abrahams) and Britney (Lola Campbell) in tow. And while all three women took matters into their own hands for Whit, Lauren was more hesitant, prompting BBC One viewers to point Chelsea out as Whitney’s truest friend.

Fans of the London-based program have been demanding more recognition for Chelsea with one writing on X: “Chelsea should be Whitney’s maid of honour. She’s the one who’s actually been there for Whitney more than anyone the last few years. Their friendship might not be as long as her and Lauren’s but it’s certainly been deeper.”

Another seethed: “I’m so so so so mad at how Chelsea and Whitney’s entire friendship has been made to seem pointless. All of my fave romantic and platonic relationships have just been shit on so majorly these last 1-2 years.” A third one echoed: “then again, Chelsea should be Whitney’s maid of honour. Neither Lauren nor Bianca were there for Peach or Whit and Zack’s entire relationship.”

A final TV watcher agreed: “Chelsea should’ve been Whitney’s maid on honour. She’s been more of a friend than Bianca and Lauren.” Whitney and Chelsea once lived together at No.1 Albert Square as the former helped her pal overcome her traumatic breakup with serial killer Gray Atkins, who was arrested in early 2022.

Prior to this, Whitney desperately tried to help and save Chelsea from Gray’s grasp as she discovered he was not only abusive but he was also responsible for her former pal Chantelle Atkins’ death.

However, since Whitney and Zack have been involved and focused on building a family of their own, Chelsea has been somewhat forgotten, although her personal life as been the topic of much speculation as newcomer Junior Knight recently flirted with her.

Lauren Branning, on the other hand, has been severely criticised for her behaviour as she secretly romped with Zack Hudson (James Farrar) behind Whitney’s back. And although Bianca Jackson found out about the tryst, she decided against telling Whitney the truth to spare her the heartache.

On Thursday, however, EastEnders ended the week with the birth of Whitney’s daughter Dolly but Zack’s joy was cut short when a chat with Lauren led Britney to find out they had a fling. Upcoming scenes will show Whitney on a cloud as she gets ready for her nuptials with Zack but how will Britney deliver the bombshell?
