EastEnders’ Danny Dyer teases return for 40th anniversary – but there’s a huge twist

Mick Carter actor Danny Dyer hasn't been seen in Walford since he vanished at sea on Christmas Day 2022 but is the pub landlord about to make a welcome return to save Linda?

EastEnders legend Danny Dyer has finally confirmed he would return to the BBC soap as Mick Carter despite the character being confirmed dead, but there would be a twist.

The Queen Vic landlord disappeared on Christmas Day 2022 after he jumped into the sea to save ‘drowning’ Linda Carter (Kellie Bright) and pregnant Janine Butcher (Charlie Brooks).

After both women resurfaced on the beach’s shore, Mick was sadly nowhere to be seen with the police concluding he died at sea despite never finding his body.

In a modern and tragic love story, teenage sweethearts Mick and Linda had only confessed their love for one another hours earlier. But the iconic couple never got a second chance at their marriage.

Since Mick’s disappearance, Linda has hit the bottle as a way of coping without her soul mate as hope of him ever returning have dwindled. But Mick could make a special appearance for EastEnders’ 40th anniversary in February 2025.

Speaking to Heat Magazine, Danny, 46, confirmed he would reprise his role as Mick Carter following his nine year stint. But the star would only appear as a figure of Linda’s imagination. Danny told the publication: “Everyone is asking when I’m going back to EastEnders, which is very interesting to me.”

The Football Factory explained how he felt complimented that people wanted him back in Walford, he added: “If there’s no closure there, then maybe I would come back for a dream sequence.

“I don’t think Mick could just rock up covered in seaweed! I think if they did it right, with the 40th anniversary coming up, if they came up with an idea of maybe Linda drunk or hallucinating, then I would come back and do some scenes with her.”

Speaking about his co-star, Danny added: “You know, because I do miss Kellie, and I think maybe that would stop people asking me when I’m f****** going back!”

EastEnders airs Monday to Thursday at 7.30pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer
