EastEnders fans are convinced that Shirley Carter will be making a return to Walford later this year, after the BBC soap dropped a series of hints about her comeback
EastEnders enthusiasts have been piecing together hints that suggest the return of Shirley Carter might be on the cards sooner than anticipated.
The legendary character, portrayed by Linda Henry, first made her appearance in 2006. With her bold personality and chain-smoking tendencies, Shirley quickly secured a place in viewers’ hearts.
Throughout the years, she’s found herself embroiled in numerous dramatic plots, including the murder of her best mate Heather Trott ( Cheryl Fergison ) and a tumultuous love affair with Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden).
However, in December 2022, Shirley said her goodbyes to the soap, leaving fans heartbroken. Her exit came after her son Mick vanished at sea while trying to save Linda Carter (Kellie Bright) and Janine Butcher (Charlie Brooks). Adding another layer to the drama, Shirley’s other son, the notorious Dean (Matt Di Angelo), returned to the show last year. As per the Daily Star, viewers will recall that he was arrested in April for the murder of Keanu Taylor (Danny Walters).

In reality, it was Linda who ended Keanu’s life in an effort to prevent him from choking Sharon Watts (Letitia Dean). Linda, Sharon, and the rest of The Six then pinned the crime on Dean. Since then, Dean has been behind bars, with The Six seemingly escaping punishment for their deeds. However, fans are now speculating that a comeback is on the horizon for Dean’s mum, Shirley – and it could be sooner than we expect.
Dean’s plea hearing sent soap fans into a frenzy this week after the character entered a not guilty verdict. The revelation that Dean’s court case is slated for September has led many to speculate about a potential return for his mum, Shirley. One viewer remarked on social media: “Nice to hear Shirley get a mention. Wonder if she returns for the trial.”
Another stated confidently: “She is definitely returning then.” Further speculation from fans included hopes for a fall return for Shirley in relation to Dean’s trial, with one fan begging: “Please bring back Shirley in September!” Another added: “Dean’s court case in September & a Shirley mention.
