EastEnders’ Sonia and Reiss hide a big secret after a tragic death

Reiss Colwell (Jonny Freeman) is hiding quite a lot of secrets in EastEnders at the moment, what with having killed his wife and embezzled money out of Sharon Watts (Letitia Dean) and Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden), but he adds one more to the ever-growing list in scenes to air this week.

Last Thursday’s episode of the BBC soap saw Reiss propose to partner Sonia Fowler (Natalie Cassidy), just days after smothering comatose wife Debbie to death in a bid to fix his money woes.

But with the residents of Albert Square already aware of how the couple had previously been using Debbie’s money to fund their IVF treatment, they worry about how news of their engagement might look.

While Sonia is blissfully happy, having finally fallen pregnant and now getting ready to walk down the aisle again, she and Reiss agree to keep their engagement to themselves.

However, it doesn’t look set to stay secret for long, as later that day Eve Unwin (Heather Peace) spies Reiss with Debbie’s old wedding ring in the cafe and learns of how he has proposed to Sonia.

She encourages Reiss to celebrate regardless of the local gossips, who are already in overdrive discussing the life insurance money they’ll be getting now Debbie has died.

Prior to their engagement, Reiss also confessed to Sonia he extorted money out of Sharon and Phil in a bid to settle his debts.

This week, however, a suspicious Phil continues to demand Reiss make a return on the fake investment scheme he put their money into, and has just 24 hours to get the cash together.

With Debbie’s parents also having recently arrived in Walford with some tough questions, and Debbie’s post-mortem results due any day now, is Reiss’ world about to come crashing down around him?

EastEnders airs these scenes on Monday 5 August at 7.30pm on BBC Two and from 6am on iPlayer.
