EastEnders star Natalie Cassidy reacts to Sonia’s shock murder charge: “It’s her worst nightmare come true.”
Thursday’s episode ended with a shocking scene, as Sonia was taken into police custody and later to prison after being accused of killing Debbie Colwell. During a prison visit, Sonia confronted her fiancé, Reiss Colwell, asking if he had killed his wife. Reiss denied the accusation.
In reality, viewers know that Reiss did murder Debbie in cold blood to avoid mounting care home bills. Following this huge cliffhanger, Natalie Cassidy, who plays Sonia, described the murder charge as her character’s worst nightmare come true.
Natalie explained that Sonia is in disbelief, especially with Reiss’s alibi. She’s terrified about the impact this ordeal will have on her fragile pregnancy. Sonia fears either losing the baby or having it taken away. Worried that history might repeat itself, Sonia asks Reiss if he’s responsible, primarily for Jack’s benefit, but ultimately, she trusts his denial. She even apologizes for questioning him.
Natalie expressed shock at how Reiss lets his pregnant fiancée take the fall for his crime. “You’re like, ‘Oh my God, he’s a psycho!’ It’s shocking and dark. I’m eager to see what happens next.”
As for whether Sonia can be saved, Natalie teased, “Who knows? But she’s got a lot of champions in her corner on the Square.”
