EastEnders star Emma Barton explains Honey and Jay marathon story

"I'm going to treat it as a live episode."

EastEnders spoilers follow.

EastEnders star Emma Barton has explained how Jay and Honey’s marathon scenes will work.

The show will make history in next Monday’s episode (April 22), as real-life footage shows Jamie Borthwick and Emma Barton, who play Jay and Honey respectively, compete in the London Marathon.

The pair will run the 26.2 miles to honour the legacy of brain tumour victims, including Jay’s on-screen wife Lola.

Viewers have already seen Jay and Honey begin their training for the marathon, and fans will be able to follow them around the streets of London this Sunday (April 21).

Explaining a bit more about the scenes, Emma said: “I’m going to treat it as a live episode.

“There’s three scenes – there is the start line, then Cutty Sark, then Tower Bridge and then the the finish line. We’ve just got to really make sure we and the cameras all work together as well as we possibly can.”

She continued: “Thankfully, Jamie and I aren’t speaking as Honey and Jay while we’re running, so that’s one hurdle that we’ve got over.

“We’ve got our costumes and we’ve practiced running in our costumes. They are just basic really – we’ve got T-shirt and leggings. I’ve got a little running vest, because I need all the gels and things.

“We’ve established that because obviously we have filmed part of the episode already, and then we’ve just got our names on the back which say ‘Honey’ and ‘Jay’.”

Discussing how she feels about being part of a historical moment for the show, Emma added: “It’s pretty exciting, because it’s never been done before.

“The marathon is a massive thing. We’re a London-based show, and we’re doing something that’s never been achieved before.

“It is very exciting. It’s very nerve-wracking, but I’ve worked a lot harder than I did the first time round. It was quite short notice about five years ago when I ran it for Barbara’s Revolutionaries and I wasn’t very strong.

“This time around, I’ve made sure I’ve done as much as I possibly can – all the strength training and sticking strictly to a programme. Fingers crossed, we’ll be okay.”
