EastEnders is set to deliver heart-wrenching scenes next week as one character receives a devastating diagnosis.

Fans of the BBC One soap may remember that Whitney Dean (Shona McGarty) recently paid off Britney Wainwright’s (Lola Campbell) mum Keeley Wainwright (Kirsty J Curtis) for an informal adoption.

Despite being licensed foster parents with her partner Zack Hudson (James Farrar), Whitney felt the formal process would take too long and decided to pay Britney’s mum to take her off their hands.

Zack is oblivious to this secret arrangement, thinking they are merely fostering and providing temporary accommodation for the young girl until social services find a more permanent solution. However, in the upcoming episodes, Whitney’s secret might be revealed when Britney receives a devastating diagnosis.

Later in the week, Whitney is distraught as she tries to understand more about Britney’s condition, while Zack fears that the added stress could be too much for pregnant girlfriend.

Later in the week, Zack and Whitney take Britney to her first day at school. However, when Zack suggests registering her at the GP and disclosing Britney’s condition, Whitney lies, claiming she’s already done it, fearing the truth will come out.

Whitney attempts to convince Sonia to skip the necessary checks for Britney’s registration, but her plan backfires, forcing her to bring Britney’s mum Keeley to the GP for sign-up. The situation deteriorates when Whitney misses a scan because Britney’s school informs her that her hearing aids are malfunctioning, leading to a row with Zack at home.

Later, Sonia throws a dinner party at her place, where Lauren Brannig (Jacquline Jossa), who is aware of Whitney’s secret, insists she confess to Zack or she’ll spill the beans. As the week progresses, Lauren continues to pressure Whitney to reveal to Zack about Britney’s fostering, while Whitney begs for a few more days. The pair have a heated exchange in the Minute Mart, which a puzzled Zack overhears, demanding answers.

When Whitney concocts an excuse that Zack buys, Lauren is left seething. However, their plans are halted when they discover a distressed Britney, who discloses that she encountered bullies on her way to school. Despite Zack’s advice against it, Whitney decides to confront the bully, exacerbating the situation by getting involved.

As Lauren threatens to reveal Whitney’s secret, could this be the start of a dramatic exit storyline that sees her leave with both the baby and Britney in a triple departure? This comes after actress Shona McGarty, who plays Whitney, announced last year that she was leaving the popular BBC One soap, with her final scenes expected to air shortly.

EastEnders airs Monday to Thursday at 7:30pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer
