The move came just days after Zack cheated on Whitney with her best friend Lauren Branning, a fact her step-mum Bianca Jackson knows but Whitney is currently oblivious to.

After punters in the pub got a surprise visit from Eurovision hopeful Olly Alexander, Whitney was inspired to take a leap of her own and asked Zack to marry her.

And in upcoming EastEnders scenes, the pair start to plan their nuptials.

Zack asks Martin Fowler to take on stag duties, while Whitney puts Chelsea Fox in charge of her hen do.

The bride-to-be then asks her step-mum Bianca to be her Maid of Honour.

It remains to be seen if the wedding goes to plan, but with it being soapland, the chances are unlikely, especially as Shona McGarty – who plays Whitney – is leaving the soap soon.

During her proposal, a doe-eyed Whitney said: “I always imagined love to be, you know like Disney kind of love?

“But I got my prince – it took me a couple of frogs but I got there in the end, it’s never too late is it?”

While Zack was puzzled as Bianca and Britney watched on, Whitney then got on one knee and proposed to the hunk.

As the entire pub congratulated the happy couple, Lauren walked in and was left less than impressed before storming back out.

But the scenes left a sour taste in viewers’ mouths, as one tweeted: “I don’t like this propaganda EastEnders and BBC are pushing. Why are the women proposing to men?”

A second wrote: “Whats it with Eastenders and women proposing, they let a pregnant woman dobale.”

“Why are the women proposing,” said a third with a vomit emoji.

Whitney’s proposal comes hot on the heels of Honey Mitchell, who got down on one knee and proposed to partner Billy during the special London Marathon episode that aired last month.

EastEnders airs on BBC One and is available on BBC iPlayer.
