The popular BBC format sees four pairs compete by reaching destinations fastest using any means of transportation other than air travel.

Joining Jeff in the race is his younger son, Freddie, rather than his famous EastEnders actor elder son Bobby, who plays Freddie Slater and also starred on Strictly Come Dancing.

Speaking on The One Show, the television presenter explained the reasoning as “natural selection”.

He said: “[Freddie] has that staying power, that sort of stomach for challenges. So, I knew he’d be good.

“Plus, he’s a quick thinker and as he just said, he takes lots of risks. I think you have to have a different way of thinking about things.

“Poor Bob, he’s going to be offended about that. Bob would’ve been a great teammate in so many other respects as well.

“Bob’s had some wonderful experiences – I was also mindful of the fact that Freddie would really benefit from getting a big life experience under his belt.

“No better way than travelling somewhere afar.”

Meanwhile, Jeff told a story from the family’s past that also played a part in the decision.

He recalled: “I remember taking the boys to climb some mountains in Scotland. We had a guide, we wanted to go off the beaten path.

“He took us literally up a cliff face. It was torrential rain, it wasn’t ideal.

“We had our waterproofs on but those were all sort of leaking. Bobby was literally hating me after about two minutes.

“The guy was like, quite matter-of-fact, the only way off is like seven hours that way and you’re going over the top.

“Freddie just got on with it, he was like a machine. I think ever since then, I’d seen what was really special about Fred.”

Other famous faces taking part include radio DJ Scott Mills and husband Sam and model Kelly Brook and her husband Jeremy.

Also part of the line-up is Ted Lasso actor Kola Bokinni, accompanied by his cousin Mary Ellen.

Last series of Celebrity Race Across The World saw weather presenter Alex Beresford and his father Noel ultimately triumph.
