EastEnders’ Reiss Colwell (Jonny Freeman) didn’t know what exactly he was getting into when he agreed to Teddy Mitchell (Roland Manookian) taking on his debt from Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden) – but it’s one he might soon live to regret.

With his fiancée Sonia Fowler (Natalie Cassidy) currently banged up for the murder of his wife, he has been wracked with guilt as he was the one who smothered a comatose Debbie to death in her care home bed, in an attempt to solve his money woes.

Next week, the pressure on Reiss mounts as the locals continue to gossip about Sonia, and Teddy orders him to work on his books to hide his wealth, even if it means doing illegal fiddling.

An unhappy Reiss is left with no choice, but Teddy later tries to sweeten the deal by offering to help prove Sonia’s innocence if he can meet the deadline.

Reiss agrees, not aware of quite how Teddy intends to do this – and it could soon prove to be a spectacular own goal…

His worries also mount later in the week when a reporter accosts him to get an interview, having been tipped off that he’s defending his wife’s killer.

However, he manages to use the interview to cast doubt on Sonia’s guilt, and many of the locals change their tune and decide to publicly support her.

As Alfie Moon (Shane Ritchie) flogs ‘Save Our Sonia’ T-shirts on the market, Reiss’ good mood is swiftly shattered when Debbie’s dad Hugh Collins (Michael Bertenshaw) rocks up and asks him to sign the paperwork to release Debbie’s body for her funeral.

He’s further spooked when Hugh begs him to see the truth about his supposed killer fiancé – but little does Hugh realise he’s staring right at his daughter’s murderer…

EastEnders airs these scenes from Monday 16 September at 7.30pm on BBC One and from 6am on iPlayer.
